Panjshīr
or Panjshir (literally "Five Lions" in Sanskrit/Persian:
پنج شیر) is one of the thirty-four provinces of
Afghanistan. It was established April 13, 2004. Its
population is 307,620, and its area is 3,610 square
kilometers. Its capital is Bazarak.
Ahmad Shah
Massoud, known as "The Lion of Panjshir" was
a famous leader who was assassinated by a suicide bomber
on 9 September, 2001.
At the province is a NATO-ISAF Provincial Reconstruction
Team based which is led by the US.
